Bring the Huckus VI - Spring 2015

Despite questionable weather and interesting field conditions, your Huskies managed to beat nature and get a couple of games in (full tournament for the B-Team) at Bring the Huckus this past weekend.
A decisive 13-4 W against Ithaca which opened up with a 40-yard hammer goal and was all uphill from there.
After moving to fields the TD had actually gotten a permit for, NU took down BU 13-5 to end our weekend.
The weekend was much more fruitful for NorthBeastern, who entered the tournament seeded 28th and shattered seed to place 10th overall. It's unclear whether this is due to teams leaving because of the weather, or because they're just. that. good. Wins came against Princeton B, SUNY Buffalo, and Swarthmore.
New England D-1 Regionals – Spring 2014
After a successful season and sectional tournament, the Northeastern Men’s Ultimate team found themselves competing at the University of Rhode Island in the New England D-1 Regional Tournament. Saturday May 3, brought the Huskies to pool play with Brown, UMass Dartmouth, and MIT. MIT was first, resulting in a 15-5 Huskie win to start the day. Up next was UMass Dartmouth who also fell to the Huskies 13-11, providing the second win of the day. The strength of Brown University ended up proving to be too much as Northeastern dropped their 3rd game 15-9 to end pool play holding seed. The final game of Saturday began bracket play against Williams College and it provided the Huskies one of their 2 losses allowed before being eliminated from Nationals contention. Northeastern took half 8-5 but then struggled to close out and ended losing 14-12.
Sunday gave Northeastern the chance to bounce back and look to keep moving forward with wins. The extremely windy conditions made for some interesting play through the first game with Boston-area rival Boston College. A 13-9 win was garnered and put the Huskies back up against Brown who had beaten them the day before. In another windy game, soft cap went off during half time with the score 8-6 Brown. A final score of 10-7 in favor of Brown ended Northeastern’s bracket play and their chance for Nationals. This left the team in 8th place, an improvement of finishing in 9th place the last 2 years, which had allowed the team to enter Sunday still in Nationals contention.
Our female counterparts, the Valkyries, will be returning to Nationals this year in Cincinnati, Ohio. Good luck Valks!
Eastern Qualifiers – Regular Season 2014
To open the regular season of 2014, Northeastern Men’s Ultimate Frisbee brought their talents down to Axton, Virginia for Eastern Qualifiers. With a partially healthy team, a new coach, and a new look, the team was excited about performing amongst great competition in the warmer climate. With a combination of people who arrived by plane and van, everyone was excited for an action-packed weekend with 15-point games throughout.
The team started Saturday with a loss to Virginia Tech. 15-9, but for a day with no byes, the Huskies moved on quickly. A win was gathered vs. Delaware 12-10, a loss to Williams 15-9, and then another loss to the team who would leave pool play undefeated, Penn State 15-8. Round robin play concluded with one last game Sunday morning vs. Delaware, but in a tight match, a second win was not the outcome, falling 13-12.
A 1-4 record from pool play brought Northeastern to the fight for 17th place in the loser’s bracket. They got the ball rolling with back-to-back wins 10-8 vs. Michigan State and 13-11 vs. Pennsylvania. The final game against Appalachian State saw much of Northeastern and their coaching staff leave at half to make return flights to Boston. The twelve men remaining brought the team back from a deficit at half to bring the game to universe point (10-10). The shorthanded Huskies prevailed and got the last point to break the tie and win the game. The 11-10 win vs. Appalachian State garnered Northeastern the coveted 17th spot at Eastern Qualifiers.

Preseason Summary and Alumni Tournament - 2013
Northeastern Men’s Ultimate Frisbee had great preseason that led to the almost completed establishment of two solid teams. Players are mostly all healthy after a fell preseason that brought the Huskies to Yale, Stonehill, Boston College, and Brown. Each step along the way increased team chemistry and college ultimate experience.
The first tournament of the year brought 4 vans of Ultimate players from Northeastern to compete in Yale’s Coffee Cup tournament in New Haven, CT. The athletes were split into 2 teams of equal talent consisting of rookies, returners, and veterans on each. Most colleges sent a single team to represent their clubs with Yale and your Huskies being the two exceptions. With this in mind, and the fact that many Husky players were playing with each other for the first time, the teams expected to face some tough opposition. Game experience and experience playing with new teammates were the keys throughout the weekend. In the end, one team took 9th place with an undefeated Sunday while the other took home 12th.
The club returned to Boston satisfied with the team play and excited for this weekend’s Get Skyyd tournament at Stonehill College in Easton, MA. Get Skyyd also split Northeastern into two teams of comparable ability. The tournament had a little more wind that brought the zone defenses out of some opponents which occasionally tripped up the young Northeastern teams. Increased experience was an important theme of the tournament and it also helped to highlight players with the potential to lead big roles for the regular season. Day 2 of the tournament, once again, also had a Northeastern team go undefeated.
A nice weekend without a tournament was enjoyed by the Huskies even though they stayed busy as the separation between A team hopefuls and B teammers began to be established. The next weekend would lead to the program being split to two destinations for an A and B level tournaments containing the best oppositions yet.
The B team stayed in the greater Boston area for a one day tournament at Boston College where they found themselves in a couple close games, but unable to lock it down. They brought many newcomers to the program who will hopefully continue to improve and step into larger and larger roles as the team progresses.
The A hopefuls went south to Providence, RI for Brown’s Huck-a-hunk tournament. This tournament brought together some of the most powerful programs in the region and really gave Northeastern a showing of where the team needs to be at in the upcoming season. The tournament brought some zone play and also showed the coaches that there is a lot of talent available. Northeastern enter the tournament seeded 13th and left with the 7th spot so spirits were high.
This ended the competitive part of the fall preseason but brought the team closer to the annual Alumni Tournament. The tournament brought together over 120 past and present players to enjoy a fantastic day of ultimate at Northeastern’s Carter Fields. Two mixed teams of current students faced off against an alumni team in a round robin style format. Past greats met the powerful future and a lot of fun was had. The day is a great time for the program to stay close and bond across quite the age range. The participants later traveled to The Baseball Tavern to enjoy food and drinks with each other.
Huck a Hunk Results - Preseason 2013-2014
NU Men’s disc traveled down to Brown’s Huck-a-hunk of Burning Pumpkin this past Saturday and Sunday. Brown’s tournament took place in Providence, Rhode Island and was for A-teams. The Huskies non-finalized A-team went into the tournament seeded 13th of 16 in pool play with Dartmouth, UVM, and U Conn. Expectations were high as the team entered the first real competitive tournament of the season.
For their first game of Saturday, the Huskies found themselves against their Husky counterparts from Connecticut. After a slow start, Northeastern fought all the way back and had a chance to win on universe point but unfortunately surrendered the final score to lose 12-11. Next up was Dartmouth who handed NU disc their second loss, 13-10, in another close battle. Northeastern ended the day with a win vs UVM, 9-7, to end pool play in second for the pool to move onto the Sunday championship bracket.
Sunday started with a nice win over Boston University 15-3 to move onto the quarter finals against UMass Amherst. UMass beat Northeastern, sending them out of the championship bracket and onto Boston College. After another slow start vs BC, NU found themselves too far back to close the gap late and fell 15-10. This put the Huskies in their final game for seventh place which was forfeited by an unknown opponent.
This means that Northeastern entered the tournament ranked 13th, and finished the weekend 7th. A successful weekend closed the offseason tournaments and brings your Huskies up to the last main event of the season: the alumni tournament Saturday, November 2. We hope to see you there!
The Valkyries also went down and won the Women’s tournament for the second year in a row.
