The most successful season in Northeastern University Ultimate history came to
and end on Sunday as the Gentlemen's Club fell 15-7 to the Dartmouth Pain Train in the
Quarterfinals of the New England Regionals qualifying tournament. The loss left the team
with a 3-2 tournament record, good enough for a 5th place finish; the highest in the program's
short history.
The action began on Saturday with NU facing off against Connecticut College, an
athletic team from Southern New England, ranked 14th in the region. Although rusty, the
gentlemen controlled the entire game, never trailing. In the end, Northeastern comes out
on top 15-12.
The second round of the tournament pitted NU against sectional rival Harvard. In
their previous matchup, the two teams played for second place in the Metro Boston Section.
In an upset, the Gentlemen's Club won 15-12. This time around, Harvard came out more
prepared and focused. Playing fundamentally sound, they were able to convert several breaks,
capitalizing on every Northeastern miscue. The Gentlemen's Club played hard, but were unable
to derail the Redline. Final score, 15-11.
With elimination only one loss away, the gentlemen faced the Bad Touch from Roger
Williams. Demoralized from the previous game, NU played sloppily. However, with a much deeper
and more experienced roster Northeastern prevaild 15-12, ending Roger Williams' season and
earning the chance to play UMass in the last round of the day.
In what was one of the most exciting games of the tournament, both NU and UMass were
able to go on large runs, eventually finding themselves tied at 14-14. With the disc, UMass was
able to complete a long huck just short of the goal line; however, they were denied the score when
the following pass was footblocked by Brian Cox. The gentlemen scored the next two points to send
Zoodisc home. Final score, 16-14.
On Sunday morning only six teams remained: Brown, Williams, Harvard, Dartmouth, MIT, and Northeastern.
In the first round, the Gentlemen's Club would match up against the Dartmouth Pain Train. The two teams
previously met at Yale Cup, with Dartmouth winning easily 13-5. Since that time the gents had improved
leaps and bounds as a team, but after a grueling Saturday, did not have the legs to stay with the
tournament's #2 seed. With a 15-7 victory, Dartmouth ended Northeastern's solid run through the College
Series. During that span, the Gentlemen's Club recorded a 9-3 record, outscoring opponents 162-115.
