On February 8th the Northeastern University Gentlemen’s Club touched down at McCarran
International Airport to attend the third annual Trouble in Vegas tournament held in
Las Vegas, Nevada. The three-day competition not only marked the most recognizable
tournament ever attended by NU, but also the team’s earliest start to the spring season
in program history.
Boasting a roster full of young players, the Gentlemen’s Club entered Friday’s pool play with
games against the University of British Columbia-B, Duke, and University of Nevada-Reno respectively.
It was clear during the first game that this was NU’s first time playing together as a full unit, as
well as their first time playing outside in several months. UBC-B proved to be a challenge for a
rusty Northeastern team, but the gentlemen were able to hold out with a universe point win. Final
score, 11-10. The team played much better in the second game and at times outplayed the Duke Brimstone;
however, unable to convert turns into breaks, NU trailed the entire game. Final score, 7-13. After an
abnormally long bye, NU came out flat against UN-Reno. In a very forgettable game, Northeastern lost 7-10.
The second day of the tournament proved to be a bright spot for the gentlemen. In the day’s first three
games the Gentlemen’s Club faced the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Whitman, and Creighton. Defense became
the theme of these games as the D-line stepped up and converted a number of forced turns for scores.
Jumpstarted by a Brian Halayko lay out D, NU rolled through all three games, winning 13-2, 13-5, and 13-4
respectively. After another unusually long bye, NU matched up against the University of Santa Barbara-B in the
last round of Saturday pool play. In this game the offense would have to hold its own. In a hard-fought game,
the gentlemen found themselves down several breaks at half. However, the O-line settled down and converted
whenever necessary. Tied at 10-10, Joe Clegg caught a Dave Picard huck in the endzone to seal the victory.
Final score, 11-10. The win left NU 4-0 on the day, as they outscored their opponents 50-21.
After a long two days, Northeastern entered Sunday with only two games. The first was against Cal State-Long
Beach, with the winner playing for the Tier Four Championship. After a slow start, a Mapolo Buessing D brought
the gentlemen back to life. NU’s veterans took control and gutted out a victory in what was a heavily contested
game. Final score, 13-12. In the Tier Four Championship the gentlemen faced University of San Diego Flat Tax. San Diego
played a three man cup the entire game, allowing Northeastern to extensively work on its zone offense for the first time
this year. The adjustment took some time and NU fell into a big hole early. A late surge was not enough and Flat Tax
took the 'W.' Final score, 8-11.
