on't be caught wearing your bow tie tucked under the collar of your shirt. Here are ten tips to save the day:

1. Throw away that pre-tied bow tie. Buy a proper one, and find the kind of girl who can tie it for you.

2. A black bow tie goes with a black tux, and also with a white summer dinner jacket. A white bow tie is only for very formal occasions, with a black tailcoat.

3. With a wing-collared shirt the tips of the collar should be tucked behind the bow-tie.

4. A white handkerchief should be tucked into the breast pocket of a black dinner jacket - only ever arranged in a straight line, maximum 2cms showing. Never with the points sticking up.

5. For members of a wedding party, a boutonniere should be pinned to the left lapel buttonhole. Don't worry if the buttonhole is sewn closed (they often are).

6. With a black dinner jacket you can wear a black waistcoat or a black cummerbund - never both. White waistcoat only with white tie and tails.

7. The pleats on a cummerbund should always be worn pointing upwards (think of it as your crumb-catcher).

8. Avoid hilarious floral waistcoats unless you want to look as though you've stepped out of Four Weddings and a Funeral. And please don't get adventurous with turquoise.

9. There's no need for a waistcoat or cummerbund with a double-breasted dinner jacket.

10. Black evening socks (not chunky hand-knit) need to be long enough to cover hairy calves when you're sitting.
